if you don\u2019t know the language, it is going to be very difficult to learn how to do your job.\u00a0 Imagine that you have just been transported to the mythical country of \u201cochemia\u201d, a small island nation in the south Pacific, where your job is to write chemistry reactions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aceorganicchem.com\/Elite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/foreign-language.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1617\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aceorganicchem.com\/Elite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/foreign-language.jpg?resize=259%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"foreign language\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frequently, in a chemistry lecture, professors start tossing out strange organic chemistry nomenclature terms far too quickly.\u00a0 Because students aren\u2019t fluent in \u201cochemia\u201d yet, they need to translate each word in their head to understand what the instructor has just said.\u00a0 By the time this mental translation is done, the student has just missed the next sentence and has lost half of the lecture.\u00a0 Our goal is to get as fluent as we can in the language of chemistry as quickly as we can.\u00a0 Here are some terms it will be helpful to memorize so that you don\u2019t have to do a mental translation when you hear them:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meth = 1<\/p>\n<p>Eth= 2<\/p>\n<p>Prop = 3<\/p>\n<p>But = 4<\/p>\n<p>Pent = 5<\/p>\n<p>Hex = 6<\/p>\n<p>Hept = 7<\/p>\n<p>Oct = 8<\/p>\n<p>Non = 9<\/p>\n<p>Dec = 10<\/p>\n<p>Nucleophile\u00a0= has electrons, has a negative or partial negative charge<\/p>\n<p>Halogen = F, Cl, Br, I<\/p>\n<p>Aprotic solvents\u00a0= do not contain OH or NH bonds<\/p>\n<p>Protic solvents\u00a0= contain OH or NH bonds<\/p>\n<p>Lewis Acid = electron acceptor<\/p>\n<p>Lewis Base = electron donor<\/p>\n<p>Carbonyl group =\u00a0 (C=O)<\/p>\n<p>Cis = same side of a double bond or ring<\/p>\n<p>Trans = opposite sides of a double bond or ring<\/p>\n<p>Electrophile = wants electrons, has a positive or partial positive charge<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For more help with this, here is a pretty good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chem.ucla.edu\/harding\/IGOC\/IGOC.html\" target=\"_blank\">glossary with pictures<\/a>. \u00a0I really like this resource, good one to bookmark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Organic chemistry nomenclature can be difficult. &nbsp;
